Actually, he's right.

Define "shallow". It's not like he doesn't care about anything. True, we don't see him being particularly passionate about anything professionally, but a) that may be simply behind the scenes, b) he may not have found himself yet. In terms of caring about people, he's also not shallow - he cares about Blythe and tries to understand her, not just make a conquest of her, he cares about Janey, and he even cares about Ruthie. He is interested in different subcultures, he finds meaning in music. For a guy his age who also happens to be popular with girls, that's not too bad actually :)
Sure, he's not a poet, and he doesn't have a deep meaningful existential angst - but so what? You don't need one to be non-shallow.
